Joss Stone - Soul Sessions
Has anyone bought/listened to this album? I've ordered it (US release, NZ$22 and not copy-controlled thank you very much ) on the strength of her cover of 'Fell in Love With a Boy', but would be interested on people's opinions.
Thanks

Yeah, I've heard it and it is excellent! If someone had told me that it was from 1973 then I would have believed them!
Stone has a fantastic soul voice and (glory be) she doesn't oversing in the Mariah Carey way, ie using 8 notes for a word when one will do.
Musically it sounds like a 1960s/70s soul album, with the band in the background and her voice up front. The only thing that gives the newness of it away is some more modern eq to her voice on some tracks - pushing the upper register further forward.

Is she the one who's only 16? If so then she has a very bright future ahead of her.

Amazing CD! Lovely to listen to - got it yesterday. Heaps better (to me anyway) than Nora Jones 2.

Well....the CD arrived Friday, just in time for the weekend trip out of town.
Very good, and I'd recommend it in an instant. Spent a lot of time in the car's CD player. I'd play something else, but end up going back to Joss time and time again.

Long live vinyl !
PS ...for digiphiles this album is on special at a few online retailers.
Eg. Amazon has it for $9.99US (~$15NZ) plus shipping.

My wife arrived home with this album today and I'd concur with all the good comments from the other posters. There's a very authentic soul feel and I find it very hard to reconcile the voice I'm hearing and the fact that it's coming out of a 16 year old. Well worth checking out.
Cheers,
Craig.

Got my US CD of The Soul Sessions yesterday.
Great songs, great singing but gawd what awful sonics.
There's plenty of no real low bass, some mid-bass goosing, digitally clean midrange (in the perjorative sense), a high end that's flat and one dimesional, non-existant imaging.
Overall a very fatiguing album to listen to.
Contrast that with a US copy of Norah Jones' Feels LIke Home , which sounds like real people are performing.
Next stop, the vinyl versions...

No such problems here with regards to it being fatiguing. I've played it a bit and haven't really noticed any major problems at all. Could this be the first album known to man in which the Aussie produced version is better than the US one??
Cheers,
Craig.

Hi Jay,
Amazon only has the CD at $9.99US.
The vinyl is $29.99US and available at places like Acoustic Sounds, Music Direct, Red Trumpet.
Hi Craig,
It must be that super duper upsampling Meridian magic.
I'll probably end up getting Joss Stone on vinyl (as well as Norah and the new Eden Atwood album and...).
...there goes my pocket money.

Ah sorry mis-understood. The Nora Jones vinyl is pretty good actually. Well worth getting IMHO.
