He is quite keen on 1080p but the prices are a little high for the flat panels...basically it has come down to the last of the Sony 50" SXRD 1080p RPTVs available or a 720p 50" Flat panel both at the magic $3K mark. Ive perused the forums and it seems like the Panasonic Plasmas would be the way to go. He has checked both out but as they are not really set up properly instore he is undecided. So which way should he go...1080p SXRD or 50" Panasonic Plasma?.
Ok my mate ended getting the 1080p LCD Samsung 46" N81 for $2900ish from DSE Powerhouse last night. It includes the HD Freeview set top box via redemption. He was up till 2am impressing himself by watching various HD DVDs on his EP10. He is a happy guy...not quite 50" but close and 1080p with 3x hdmi to boot.

    **warning**

    *********************************************
Guys just letting you know I noticed a green blob and a green streak down one side of the TV at the weekend it looks like the same optical block issues reported at this site.
    http://splinke.googlepages.com/sonyr...v-opticalblock

As always I have just ran out of standard warranty by 2 months (should have extended for this I guess but have never had issues with Sony gear b4 had my last Sony CRT TV for 12 years no probs at all). I could kick myself now 'cause I bought the TV on impulse and didn't do any research.

I am going to contact Sony and see what there position is as there were law suits in the USA and talk of extended warranty by Sony for some models of rear projection tv's.

Anyway my advice in hindsight to any Sony RP LCD tv owners is to extend your warranty if possible or better still avoid buying in the first place.

    Watch this space.

    Mark.

As Senator implied, the CGA provides you with some great protection here - a purchased item has to last as long as you'd reasonably expect it to. A TV should last for years, not 14 months. Sony should pay the vast majority, if not all, of any repair bill - forget the US lawsuits, just talk about the consumer guarantees act when you talk to them.

I was hoping things wouldn't have to get ugly.

Got this back from Sony at 11:30 less than an hour after contacting them which is pretty good I have to say - lets hope the issue itself gets resolved in an equally efficient manor

    Hi Mark,
Thank you for contacting Sony NZ.
Please follow the link provided to contact your closest Sony Authorised service centre to get your KS-70R200a looked at by a Technician. Due to it being 2 months out of warranty we will cover the warranty as long as its due to manufacture fault (just like any Sony Warranty). Please get the Sony Authorised service centre you choose to authorise this with Sony’s ASC team so you won’t be charged.

I hope this helps resolve your query. If not, or more information is required, please contact us on 0800 SONY NZ (0800 766 969).
    Kind regards,

Engineer arrived yesterday and confirmed it is optical block, I asked him if he had had a lot of these and he nodded. Took some pictures however couldn't get into the service menu as he had the wrong sequence photocopied so will be back just to record the lamp and panel times.

Additionaly he said that Sony generally replace the set rather than the offending chipset however they haven't had to deal with a 70inch as yet.

Incidentally I couldn't find a service manual online for a KS-70R200A or the routine of how to get into the service menu - that worked, if any of you know how please let me know.

    Cheers

I just assumed he was talking about a like for like but now you come to mention it I guess it could be a complete replacement eh to phase out the faulty ones once and for all?? I had thought about a refund but I wouldn't get as big a tv for the money yet so would rather keep the one I've got as long as it is fixed period.

Just waiting for engineer to come back and take the lamp hours etc before the options are known.

Finally got into service mode (which IS actually the same routine as most Sony models) and got the lamp time hours etc (3000) so now a report goes off to Sony to see what they are going to do about it.

There was an issue of getting a decent picture of the green blob effect as it depended what was on screen, greenish pictures showed up the problem best. I used superman returns but saving P-Ryan is also good but best of all is the PS3 in the mornings as it has a greeny-aqua backdrop in default mode that shows the problem nicley.

A 70" x-series bravia please Sony if you cannot fix or replace my current model.
