    Strange sub problem

Trying to set-up my Velodyne active sub from out of my Yamaha amp.
Using the Yamaha auto speaker set-up with the mike you can hear the sub but trying to set up the speaker volume for surround sound the front, centre, rears work but nothing goes to the sub. The picture on the screen shows the sub along with the fronts and rears. Any ideas from anyone?

Please clarify what you're actually doing - setting speaker volumes using the Yamaha test tones? If so, I have a vague thought from when I used to have a Yamaha AVR that the test tone didn't go to the sub. Do you have a DVD with THX Optimiser on it? That will work assuming you have the Yamaha settings correct.

To be honest, I've never found test tones particularly helpful for subs. IME better to set by ear using a movie passage that you're familiar with.

    Cheers, B

My Denon receiver hasd a setting for with a sub and without a sub (sends low frequency signals through the speakers rather than the sub.My guess is that their will be a setting for with and without a sub.

Interesting about test tones not going to the sub so I'll try a DVD and play by ear and report back any findings.

Dusted off a 2010 Bad Company DVD and as Boris alluded to the sub came to life. All I need to do is figure out how much signal strength to give it and the frequency at which it cuts in at.

You're not on a mode that sends CD audio to fronts only? Long shot, but some of the 'surround' type settings exclude the sub and some include it.

It's working so now, when I have the time, I'm trying to get the sub to come into play smoothly as the main fronts roll off the sub rolls in without over kill. The manual says to set the output to the same setting as the front speakers.
That's with music DVD's but will need to try some film DVD's next. Maybe tomorrow when the grandkid comes I can frighten the bejesus out of him.

Test tones can be a good way to do this. You can get them free from the net and they offer a quick chance to see how things go as the frequency increases. You're looking for a fairly smooth transition and also to ensure you don't leave a hole with no, or a limited response. As above though, make sure you've got the receiver configured correctly to ensure audio is going to the fronts and the sub.
