    Little Feat - Live LP

I just scored a mint, unplayed 1978 pressing of Waiting For Columbus by Little Feat on vinyl. (On Trade Me of all places??!!!) I've heard this album on CD before but OMG this is SOMETHING ELSE! Astoundingly musical band captured before Mr. George partook of so much white stuff his heart gave out.......

Anyway got me to thinking what y'all think of live rock albums versus studio albums - any classic live albums you just can't live without?

I'm a big fan of live recordings, love the warts and all, and sometimes the frailties of an artist/performance only add to the end result.

In no particular order I'd have to list
Who Live at Leeds, the deluxe remastered with complete Tommy.

    Richard Thompson-Semi Detatched Mock Tudor

Tim Buckley- Dream Letter, live in London

Dead Can Dance- Toward the Within

Emmylou Harris and the Nash Ramblers-Live at the Ryman

    Willie Nelson-Willie and Family Live

Neil Young- Live Rust & Weld

Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham- Moments from this Theatre

Plus a couple from my unofficial recordings selection
Iris Dement-Berkley 1992, pure country at its best

Maria McKee-Logo Theatre 1993-exciting singer at her best with a very good band and a couple of mighty Van Morrison covers.

and an absolute favourite, Richard Thompson Live at the Bottom Line NY 1992, 6 cds covering 2 nights where the audience submitted requests into a bucket on their way in which he then drew from, included valiant stabs at everything from the Beach Boys to the Sex Pistols plus his own extensive catalogue. A lesson on how to live dangerously and survive, great musicianship and lots of humour/banter with the audience as he battles through the bucket.

For aspiring songwriters there's also Butch Hancocks No Two Alike series, 14 tapes/cdrs covering 6 nights at the Cactus Cafe Tx,
over 100 of his own compositions and as the title says, no two alike, or repeated.

At a time when so many recordings have been feed through so many processes it's great to be able to listen to music as it should be , warts and all.
    Live- love it.

Yes! Some live albums can be great.

Some "live" albums haave a lot more studio performances in them than live, unfortunately

Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham- Moments from this Theatre
Must chase this one up. Dan Penn's Do Right man is a big favourite.

Some of my live favourites include:

Van Morrison It's too late to stop now. Recorded in 1973, near the end of his Calidonia Soul Orchestra phase, several versions of songs better the studio versions. Possibly an absolutely live album - Van flubs the lines of Gloria!

Bee Gees Here at last... live. My introduction to the Bee Gees. My dad's wife bought it for me as a birthday present in 1977 - before Saturday Night Fever struck. I've been a great fan of the various phases of the Bee Gees career ever since. This is also a favourite album of my mum's, although that's not normally a recommendation!

Niel Diamond Hot August Night. Another favourite of me mum (oh dear!). This album spent years popping in and out of New Zealand's top 20 album chart.

Louden Wainwright III A live one. Just Louden and his acoustic guitar, singing many songs from his early career. Louden sounds depressed, so it's not a happy-happy live album.

Guy Clark Keepers I guess the title means the songs worth keeping. Wonderful live album by one of the USA's best songwriters. It's a pity that there's nothing from the Old friends album on here, as it's my favourite of his.

Nice one Silver ..... I saw them here a couple of years ago. It was one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever had. Friends of mine opened for them and I have NEVER seen 'em so nervous.... heh heh.

Michael W.... I got to meet and play before Emmylou with Buddy Millar in 2000... what a bill that was! Oh, and I have Time Loves A Hero which is great but it's not a live album??? I love Sailing Shoes of their studio albums.. raw but wonderful.

    Here's one for you all:

BB King - Live At The Regal. Arguably the best live blues album you will ever hear. BB before a black audience - the crowd is 50% of the album.

Rhino's remastered 2002 reissue of "Waiting For Columbus" on CD is also superb. It expands and resequences the songs into a full concert set with encore. The two tracks deleted from the 1990 CD release are restored and further augmented by additional live performances 'One Love Stand', 'Rock And Roll Doctor', 'Skin It Back', 'On Your Way Down', 'Walkin All Night', 'Cold, Cold, Cold' & 'Day At The Dog Races'. There are also 3 outtakes first issued on the album "Hoy Hoy!" 'Skin It Back', 'Red Streamliner' & 'Teenage Nervous Breakdown'. While the original vinyl release is in every way superior to the 1990 CD, this 2002 remaster is THE definitive edition.

I have a live recording of their show from the Auckland concert chamber 1999, nice show, similar set to their official release.
On that tack there're a couple of excellent 2cd sets from the Gluepot floating around, Lucinda Williams and Gurf Morlix, and Guy Clark

Have to agree with Michael, Clarks' Keepers' is a nice show.

John Lee Hooker, 'Bedroom Boogie' is a great blues show, like the BB King one the audience is right there, Prime Hooker from 1976 and you can almost see the sweat oozing from the cd, hot and steamy.

Janis Joplin's early Jazz/Folk Club recordings. Sonics to give audiophiles the heebie jeebies, but performances to die for.

Great performance, slightly sterile sound, oddly described in one review in the Melbourne Age as 'easy listening'.

Heh heh even got the Cat. numbers eh?

I had the pleasure of playing guitar on a track with Renee Geyer for The Underwatermelon Man (a kids CD/Book) - she is an amazing vocalist who puts everything into her performances. It was meant to be a vocal duet but methinks I failed the audition. LOL

Maybe the Melbourne AGE is an appropriate name for that particular rag? Easy listening???? Easier than Jimmy Barnes lately, granted..... but easy listening??? humph

I wouldn't get to an audition - don't think Ms Geyer would
want to be accompanied by a pipe organ.
I did however stumble across her singing one glorious spring day in the 70's. On the lawn at Melbourne Uni, LSD'd out of our heads , we thought we'd died & gone to heaven. (Concert not recorded GRRRR!) Saw hear earlier this year in Launceston - she's even better than ever. Why the hell she's never had a significant impact on the international music scene I'll never know.
