Hey there,
When we moved to the UK 5 years ago, our TV wouldn't work due to the different PAL system (B vs I) I think. Anyway, we're on our way home to NZ & now have a Tosh 32WD98B to bring home - if it will work.
Anyone know if its possible to mod a UK std TV for NZ?
Thanks,
PH

It might be possible if you can find a technician with the patience and expertise (most TV techs here are USELESS!).
But cost may prove prohibitive.
I think you would be better off selling the Toshiba and buying a new TV when you return home.
There's quite a range of WS sets available now.
JVC, Sony, Philips, Gundig, Loewe, Panasonic all have WS models for the NZ market.
Not only do you avoid the hassle of getting it modified (and you can guarantee it will not be a painfree process) , you avoid the risk of damage to such a fragile item en route to NZ.

I imported a small scaler (TV-4000) which is widely available in the UK.
It has PAL BG tuner built-in. The tuner section receives TV2, TV3 and TV4 but not TV1.
You may find the same if your TV tuner is PAL BG (it may be PAL I). I was also advise it's not cost effective to modify it.
I think MW's advice is good: sell your TV and save yourself the hassle.

Thanks guys, sensible advice.
Just hurts to have to dump a £1,200 TV for not very much!

Guys,
The standard reply just in from Toshiba - no surprises then!
"Thank you for your recent enquiry. Please find the information that you requested as follows:
We recommend that Toshiba televisions purchased in the UK are not taken to another country because these televisions have been designed for use on the English PAL-I system, and will work on a voltage of 220-260V. If you do take your set to another country it may require considerable modification at your cost and cannot be fully tested before leaving the UK, also the availability and ability of service companies in the other country will be
unknown.

There are several issues to address. Firstly you may not be aware of it but the magnetic field in the UK is opposite to that in New Zealand. Generally when TVs are manufactured for the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere the tubes are calibrated to take this into account. Some TVs such as the Philips have the ability to adjust for the difference. So be aware of this as the picture may tilt on an angle in NZ.
Modern sets will decode just about any system. Check your menus again. Two issues are picture and the sound sub carrier which is different in NZ. You may get a picture but no sound.

Thanks,
We experienced the picture with no sound when we took our NZ TV to the UK in the first place. Got round that by buying a UK VCR and routing the sound to the Amp & HT speakers.
Have since spoken to a friend who came from Singapore to UK and was able to find a technician to make the small mod necessary. Apparently its not too difficult - the problem is finding someone who knows how though.
Cheers,
Peter
