Hi,
I am interested in building a high-end loudspeaker replica. I am thinking
along the lines of Wilson Audio, JMlab Utopia... etc. I am very interested
to hear from anyone who has built, or is investigating building a similar
system. Any www links would be great too. I have already seen the links to the ProAc Response 2.5 which are fantasticly clear and complete. Any other suggestions?
The speakers will be driven by:
ME1400 amplifier
ME24 preamp
Onkyo CD player
Thanks
Dave

Oh another thing, the frequency response of the ProAc 2.5's is given as going down to 20Hz, according to the ProAc website (no - dB quoted with figure). Can anyone tell me how exaggerated this is?

The original review in Stereophile gave the 2.5's anechoic bass response as being -6dB at 30Hz, with a sharp 24dB/octave rollout below that frequency.
The reviewer (Michael Fremer) made the following *in room* measurements;
+/- 2dB from 250Hz to 31.5Hz
-3dB @ 25Hz
-7dB @ 20Hz
Pretty damn impressive for a single 7" paper cone !

ProAc, along with many other manufacturers, normally don't use "off the shelf" drivers in their speakers. Although the drivers may be manufactured by companies like Vifa and Seas, the drive units used by ProAc will not be available to you. You may be able to make a speaker that physically looks like a ProAc, but it probably won't sound quite the same.

This page has some really impressive examples of DIY speaker replicas.

Michael W: Thanks for the link to the Stereophile review!
AudioEnz: I understand that the drivers might not be extacly the same... but hey that's part of the challenge :)
JamesB: Thanks for the link, I liked the Legacy and Wilson Audio clones!
Well at this stage it looks like I will be building the ProAc 2.5's unless another idea comes up soon. There is plenty of info and a lot of the guess work is taken out of the project.
Thanks,
David

Another speaker which looks very interesting is the "Andromeda":

but I would be scared to go and spend the money the Focal Audiom 13kx drivers (around AU$1100 each) whichout having heard the finished product. Don't suppose anybody has built these, or another DIY project with similar drivers?
Thanks
David

Oh, yeah, don't forget the dipole design at:

As I remember people thought these were pretty good...

thats crazy!
you would need an acousticaly perfect room !(which i dont happen to have :-P)+-6db peaks i expect in my room.
:D
www.speakerworkshop.com > i think that has jig, that can measure resistors accurately- i dont know of inductors..similar jig to what some one else mentioned..
