View Full Version : Rega arm rewire - anyone in nz that can do this

I've got a Rega RB300 arm I'd like to get an internal rewired done on but am to unco to do it myself. Rather than send the arm overseas to get done I'm wondering if there is anyone in NZ that do this? Does anyone out there know of any HiFi shop or individual in NZ that provides this service?

Shore Hi-fi should be able to do it.

That was my pick but I'd have to put up with Mr. Vivian giving me lots of shit. Oh well I'm quite used to that.

I think there's some earplugs here, under review somewhere. LOL.

Ignoramous question, but why would you want to do this? Is the current one broken, or is it a desirable upgrade?
I'm wondering where the weak link in my TT set-up is at present that means I'm listening to CD as preference all the time...

Yes Aaron, you could wire up your tonearm with some Nordost...

Dispite what Rega may say their arms (well from the RB600 down IMO) do benefit from being rewired. I've had a RB300, 600 and 900 done previously and the improvement was well worth the time and money. The arm I have at the moment has had the external wires done but not the internal and I just want to tidy it up a bit with improved wiring right through.

Do Nordost have a tonearm wire... or something suitably fine & flexible?

I detect the slightest hint of sarcasm here... :)

I suspect Nordost do sell tonearm cable but I haven't come across it. There are a few 'kits' available for the internal rewiring as well as full internal and external kits. I'm just too useless when it comes to this kind of work so thought I'd source the wire then pay someone who knows what they are doing to fit it. Give me a hammer, spanner or spade and I'm fine.

Sounds like you need a DV 10X5.

HEIMDALL TONE ARM INTERCONNECTS available. Not sure if this is the same as internal wiring... Maybe a touch, but mostly earnestness, Aaron...

Ah, I'm sorry I misjudged you (perhaps...).
I'm a sucker for the Heimdall, it is just a beautiful looking cable.
Problem is the tone arm interconnects would probably cost more than the entire P3 TT + arm...

Yep, and they still wouldn't sort out the arm wire itself... IIRC Nordost do a Valhalla arm wire... at least VPI use it.

if you haven't already considered the Incognito, here is a link http://www.decibelhifi.com.au/prod114.htm

Yeah I was aware of that one but to be honest I don't want to spend that much and the arm already has VDH external wire so its halfway there.

FYI-found this post....
"My RB300 is rewired with 36 AWG PTFE ( teflon ) insulated copper-litze.
In fact it's made from a dead PC-mouse cable ; when you remove the outer sleeve and the screening you end up with very flexible teflon insulated wire. I used it in one straight line from cartridge to phono-amp
without any screening , each wire between arm and phono-amp inside another PTFE sleeving.
Thats's why the capacitance is so low : distance between conductors !
Total capacitance measured was ~47 pF including amp-input with cartridge disconnected offcourse.
Calculations : Ropt= 1/sqr ( L/C ) gives 30,9 KOhm for loading and a resonance of 109,5 kHz.
Where L = cartridge inductance ( 45 mH ) and C = measured total cabling cap ( ~47 pF ).
45 mH + 100 pF will give you 15K loading and 75,05 kHz resonance.
At the moment I'am just experimenting with different R-values for loading.
Capacitance should be as low as possible.
No screening !! "

I have used headphone cabling successfully for the same task.
Have fun

I've rewired a tone arm with pure silver from cartridge to phono input. Was well worth it.
Don't use copper go for silver and remember it is directional.
Doubt if Shore hi-fi would care what direction to use.
You will need to sort directional-ability if manufacturer doesn't.
It is a tricky job good for a watchmaker.
Give Chriquet Electronics a ring 09-818-5196.

I ended up getting a rewire kit from the UK that is a clone of the Incognito kit (same plugs and actual wire) but is half the price. Better still the manufacture had a sale on so it cost about $150NZ including shipping. It should arrive shortly.
