Gentlemen.
I have just returned from a quite amazing performance at the Hammersmith Palais.
In the last 2 months I've seen Tim and Neil Finn and the Manic Street Preachers. I'm afraid the Doves are my fav of the lot. If you haven't heard of them they have 3 released albums. Lost Souls, Last Broadcast and a remix album titled Lost Sides. A fourth has either just been released or is imminent.
You really should take a listen at your local and treat yourself. I hope you'll be as impressed as I was.
Enjoy.

What were the Doves like live? "Lost Souls" definitely ranks as one of my all time favourite albums. Didn't know a new album was on the way though.
Have you heard the SJD album at all?
Just looking through my current listening box to see if we cross paths in other areas...How about American Music Club, The National, Richmond Fontaine, Tindersticks, or Jim White?
The new Manics album has received very mixed reviews. I think the songs are some of the best they've ever written but it does seem to be missing that spark....
Cheers

Hi KS
Lucky Puppy
I know! Living in London does have it's benefits.....and some drawbacks!
What were the Doves like live?
Absolutely fantastic! We saw them at the Hammersmith Palais. Essentially a glorified pub with no seating and a 3/4 balcony. We managed to get a possy on the balcony affording us an incredible view and great sound! Got home and my ears we're ringing!
"Lost Souls" definitely ranks as one of my all time favourite albums. Didn't know a new album was on the way though.
Likewise, love Lost Souls. I am searching for a copy on vinyl, no luck, yet. Do you have Last Broadcast? Thats excellent too. They played a couple of new songs so I thought I'd missed the release of a new album but couldn't find one. They are also touring the country Feb-Apr next year so I'm sure one is in the pipeline..
Have you heard the SJD album at all?
No. Do tell?

5 strikes! Sorry...but there was a post quite recently where we discussed Lampchop, Ryan Adams, etc....that's my bag too.

Don't have the latest, went for the old ones. Motorcycle Emptiness was amazing. Anything off the "design for life" album went down BIG TIME. Good to see the once I think!

Do you have Last Broadcast?
Sure do and 'Lost Sides'. Both are pretty good but I still think "Lost Souls' is their masterpiece.
SJD - Sorry I forget that not everyone on this forum is in NZ. SJD is the moniker for Sean James Donnelly a kiwi musician. He released an album earlier this year called "Southern Lights" that is well worth exploring.
Tried to find some streams for you to listen to but didn't have much luck. Search www.noizyland.co.nz, www.realgroovy.co.nz and www.amplifier.co.nz for info. He also has a website www.sjd.co.nz but it only features older material and its the newer stuff you need to hear. One of my albums of the year (for what its worth).

Yup, I do remember wasn't sure if you did though...Went shopping this weekend and bought the Gram Parsons "Sacred Hearts..." compilation, Uncle Tupelo "Still Feel Gone" and Buddy Miller "Universal United House Of Prayer". Also ordered Drive By Truckers "The Dirty South" and The Czars "Goodbye" as I feel they could be worth checking out. My list of music to buy grows every week. So much music so little time.....
Cheers

I'm going to start gloating so watch out! I've just bought a sealed copy of the Lost Souls on vinyl. Pity the turntable is on the other side of the earth :(

Sounds good I can get a friend to check out for me.

Nup. Didn't understand a word of it :)
Bought 4 CD's over the weekend, the first lot in about 3 months. It's been tough! They were...
Scissor Sisters - absolutely brilliant album.
Morcheeba - Charango
The Streets - A grand don't come for free
Kings of Convenience - Riot on an empty street
Enjoy!

Have seen 'Lost Souls' around on vinyl and have been tempted but i'm not entirely happy with the way my turntable is sounding right now so... funny thing is I bought 'lost souls' and 'parachutes' on the same day and landed up getting 'parachutes' on vinyl too.
little did i know a few years down the line that it would be 'lost souls' that would stand the test of time...
the Scissor Sisters album is great (yup i spend too much money on music) - some of the best pop music i've heard all year

And there I was thinking I'd got the last copy in existence....well certainly the last copy off GEMM!

What's wrong with it? I'm still buying vinyl even though my turntables a little inaccessible right now ;)

What's wrong with it?
Tough one to answer. I have a NAD 533 and someone broke the stylus of the factory fitted Goldring Elektra cartridge and I couldn't find a replacement so decided to upgrade to a MC cartridge (bad idea). I am now using an Ortofon OM 10 which is closer to what I had but it could be better.
Having said that i'm a relatively new arrival in NZ and the houses here are built completely different to what i'm used to (wooden floors and hollow walls vs. concrete and bricks). Since arriving I haven't really had the time to get my system singing so the entire system needs fine tuning...Hopefully over the holidays :)

One of those upgrades ;)

Have we just exchanged places!!! I used to live in a wood floored largish family home and I now live in a wood floored brick flat as large as my old living room and main bedroom.

Eastern Hi-Fi should be able to help. In Auckland there are Eastern Hi-Fi stores in Link Drive on the Shore, Newmarket and "Howick" (actually just north of the Botany Downs shopping centre).
