Hi all been a while since i have posted on here been a few changes :o . I have recently brought an apple TV 2 fab piece of kit IMHO i love the interface and my favorite bit is the genius mixes great for people coming around just set the mood and leave it to it.I have it plugged into my denon 4308 vire optical and HDMI with Ethernet to the router. The denon then gets plugged into the EAR pre which i set at half volume and then control the volume with the denon. My question is for all the computer based guys what if any thing might the apple TV be lacking as in interface between the dac,s in the denon and my music collection. I have to say i am really enjoying the sound very surprising for a relatively cheep piece of kit

If you like the sound, and it sounds like you do, then it may not be lacking anything for you. Going forward however, the ATV2 will only support files to 16/44.
If you have no desire to go beyond CD quality then that's ok then!?

I agree with Ernie - your set up is as good as any and if you like the way the music sounds then that's great. As he says, it doesn't output any higher than 720p video and 16/48 sound and the optical out is not supposed to be great, jitter wise, but I find it enjoyable enough playing my apple lossless tracks.
Incidentally, I've watched a few 720p movies now and am really impressed with the playback. I can start watching a movie within 15 seconds of the download starting and I've never experienced any buffering or playback glitches - and that is using a wireless connection!

I do believe that a jail broken ATV2 can play lossless files - however, the nightly build I'm utilising has a FLAC playback glitch that only allows operation via the iPhone remote app.
*sigh*
But such are the issues with jail breaking.

Jailbreak is at your own risk... :)

I have both an AppleTV2 and a Airport Express plugged into my lounge music/TV system. I tried the ATV2 for music when I installed it but preferred the results with the Airport Express.

ATV2 outputs audio at a fixed 48khz so any input other than that is resampled to suit. This was enough to put me off so I don't have any practical experience but the general opinion seems to be that this resampling has a detrimental effect on the sound quality of 44.1khz (CD) files. I would say the quality of the audio file used is also relevant; if you are using lossy compression then the effects of resampling are probably moot.
