This may be old news but worth a mention anyway. New Plymouth now has a vinyl shop again - Vinyl Countdown, 49 Brougham St - for the first time since Raw Records closed a while back. It's mostly ex-RG Wellington stock plus other newly-imported records from the states. I picked up a nice copy of the Cure's "17 Seconds" for a satisfying $20.
I should also mention that Chadz Antiques in Liardet St is also getting much better for LPs as the owner's a t/t user.
Happy New Year, all.
DD :-)

Nice to see someone having the confidence to open a record shop, long may they run.
Maybe we need to compile a data base of shops stocking vinyl around the country. Record shops and 2nd hand book shops are always my first port of call on my infrequent trips ex Invercargill.
For anyone venturing into the deepest south here's the Facebook page for our local 2nd hand record store

Yeah it's a big call. Quite nice stock and some original pressings there, stock is from the States. The guy from Groovy in Wellington is involved.

Wouldn't the local denizens just melt the vinyl down so they can make pants?;)

Business must be good because the Vinyl Countdown is already moving to a bigger shop. Within the next week or so it will be moving to 109 Devon St West.
From Facebook
"Well everyone, you may already know this, but we are shifting Vinyl Countdown to a new site very soon! Exciting stuff! We will be at 109 Devon St West (the next shop up the hill from "Kina" and opposite TSB Showplace). So if you come along next week or the week after and we're not here, you now know where we'll be! And we'll be able to get those 400 LPs out for sale..."

I was surprised what a good shop it is.
The expected second-hand disks are priced to market (flying nun, hendrix, beatles etc), but the beauty of the small population means that there is a lot more interesting stuff that'd get snapped up in a bigger metropolis. The sales table is way better browsing than when it was in the Wellington RG store.
I found a well priced Blam Blam Blam record, and next time I visit town I'm budgeting vinyl spending into my travel expenses.

Great new location, good article on the front page of the local rag (http://www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily-news/6266919/New-record-store-doing-well-in-NP/), these guys are here to stay I hope.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a cartridge dealer in New Plymouth?

Not in N.P. I'm afraid, you have to go to the net for that. Interesting link on their Facebook page to http://www.higherfi.com/ . Amazing gear there.

I suppose that this is a good a chance to ask this with all this talk of new stores so here goes:
1. Is there a decent one in Hamilton?
2. Other than RG on Queen Street, are there any other good 2nd hand or collectors store in Auckland?
On a tiki tour starting on Friday for a week so I just thought I'd ask :)

Yup, for used LPs, Rocking Records is well worth the trip out to the Market Rd/Gt. South Rd crossroads in Remuera and Rhythm Records in Ponsonby is Roger Marbeck's retail outlet so is very well stocked for new vinyl. Southbound on Mt Eden Rd is good for that too (by Boston Rd jct) and JB is also worth a looksee.

Went in today for a look at the new shop. Very impressed, good layout and the quality of their stock is very good, lots of 2nd hand original stuff. Got BTO - Not Fragile, Steely Dan - Royal Scam, Best of Bread - Vol 2 and Angels - No Exit for $32, all cleaned up perferctly. Pretty much catching up on stuff I used to have on vinyl. Much more new stock than when I went in last, prices vary between $35-55 on average.

Are you guys buying new or used vinyl?
Over the past couple years, I've done high-res digital transfers of virtually my entire LP collection. But I stopped buying new vinyl 'round about 1985. Nice to have all this material back, since I re-purchased it on CD only in rare cases.
Since I evangelize the pleasures of bringing old analog source material into the digital world, I'm wondering if I should put my money where my mouth is and start buying new titles on vinyl, rather than on CD or FLAC download. Ultimately I want everything in bits-only format so a new disc, whether LP or CD, is only going to be played once (to transfer it to library).
Cheers,

TGD, what device/s do you use for the conversion? A friend has a Denon machine, it's okay, but the CD format never sounds a sharp as the original. I think you will find most here go new vinyl wherever possible. I go used for mainstream stuff if condition / pressing and price is right.

I play from a standard turntable, capturing audio on computer via Roland UA-1EX USB device connected to the REC OUT terminals on my receiver, sampling at 96 KHz. Then a lot of post-processing in software.
Thought I was recording at 24-bit until I discovered deep in the fine print of Audacity documentation that they are unable to record at 24-bit on Windows due to license restrictions. They just put 16-bit samples in 24-bit packages. That was disappointing.
Cheers,
Tom
