As always I have been good all year :D, Santa gave me the box set "Mothership" Led Zep.
7636
Santa was a funny fella thou - he dropped it off to my mothers house 600km away and had to pick it up! Upon the anticipation of new vinyl I traveled there and the trap was set...an overnight stay with my mum!
The problem is - one of the lp's is what I consider very bowed.
Below; this is the lp in question sitting on the turn table with out the mat for a better view of the curvature of bow.

7638
7639
When the record is spinning and just touch the record is slips very easily - and when the record is flipped only the outside edges are touching the platter.
Would this be unacceptable to you and considering the price of this box set would you ask for it to be replaced?
Cheers.

I would ask for a replacement.
How dissappointing to have your expectations dashed.
Maybe you haven't been as good as you're leading us to believe.

I live across the road from a Church, maybe this has something to do with mysterious bending of rock records?
Sonically with the bowed record, what would be the traits that it would cause?.........Slippage of the record and loss of bass would be my guess!

Not being an affecianado of the black disc my opinions are guesses only; but.....
The concave side of the disc might suffer from lack of dampening that contact with the platter would normally offer.
Incorrect stylus/groove angle might increase distortion and effect separation of channels.
Have you got any record clamps?

I would agree with your thinking too...........No clamp, thou did try to clamp with a strong steel clip, I think the lp is under a bit of tension as it spat the clip off.
Emailed the shop in question and supplied photos. They are happy to send the whole box set back to the supplier to be replaced. Just a shame as were going to show off at new years, and the bowed record has ....Over the hills and far away, Dyer maker, No quarter, Kahmir - alot of good songs for my ears.

Was it a local seller ?
If it was Amazon you might have gotten a replacement set and kept the bad one.
Other sellers ask you to return the whole set.
Danger there is you might get a good replacement but end up with another bad disc.
That's a bad warp.
Clamps won't help unless it's a VPI type peripheral clamp.

From a local supplier.
Yes - very bad now that I look at it further. The whole playing surface on the underside is not touching the mat, only about 1/4 of the label near the spindle is contacting!

No question...replacement!
Only one disc warped? One of the outer ones presumably.

This one and one other that is only very slightly bowed. The other two are flat. I cannot remember what order they came out in. The lp's were not shrink wrapped and just laid in the inner sleeve between their cardboard outer, loosely wrapped internally with bubble packaging in a hefty outer display box.

Absolutely no doubt, this is badly warped and totally unacceptable.
It's records like this that almost made me give up on vinyl...very disappointing. My latest lp was 4mm higher on one end than the other! (played ok though :-) but hate to think what strain it places on the cantilever! ).

As of lately I have had a bad run on Hi-Fi and household appliance's in general.....I am possibly seeing the benefit of buying locally for the no hassle fix it please.
How do you guys get on with overseas vinyl not up to scratch and remedying this?
I am from now on opening new vinyl in store for inspection, pity this was a xmas present and could not inspect before hand.

Vinyl ex Amazon has mostly been replaced without return of the original.
Have had more problems dealing with locals.

Totally agree. At the risk of repeating myself yet again I feel if you have a TT that will handle them a centre weight/clamp and an outer ring clamp are a must have, especially when purchasing vinyl from overseas.
I received an lp late on Friday(around 7pm) that the courier had obviously had in his van most of a very hot day. The mailer(a proper vinyl one) was dished as was the lp inside. It's pretty hard to pin this back on the supplier as I'm certain the record never left in that condition.
The lp looked in similar condition to the one in the ops pictures but using both the weights the record is held firmly to the platter and the arm tracks dead flat.
There are alot of complaints online about dished and warped lps and while I'm sure there are some that escape quality control like that, I'm also convinced that much of the problem lies with overtight shrink wrapping and the rather hostile enviroment that lps are exposed to in their travel to various parts of the globe.
Anyone who's accidently left a record in the sun will know that it doesn't take long for damage to occur.
As Michael said, the problem with returns is that you have no guarantee that a replacement will be any better, and given the very limited availability of some releases a return may not even be an option.

Two plates of glass and the oven set to 50. Don't season or cook too long.

Yip that's what I do Fisher X 100 A, open them up in front of the guys just after you pay. If it's not flat there's no excuses. That's a shocking bit of dishing I have to say. It would be interesting to know how the vinyl version sound compared to the nasty CD version.

Well, my replacement arrived today. Sadly it was not much better than the one sent back!
I opened it in the shop and placed the records on my Rega's glass TT.....:(
Two lp's were flat and the other two were dishes. Seems the one's on the bottom of the box were flatter than the top two.
Because of the price of the box set we agreed to a full refund.
It does not give me great hope with new vinyl in today's market place. I read about alot of people saying this about new vinyl? What is wrong with today's pressing why they warp?
Or is it the environment the lp's are stored in and the traveling distance from overseas to NZ?
