My local branch of TW has carried the odd vinyl lp but usually no more than a couple at a time so I was quite excited to discover a stack of around 15lps during a browse around last night.
A quick flick through revealed some quite desirable titles in blues and jazz, some double lps, all with a $28 price tag and a sticker proclaiming a 180g pressing.
The excitement rapidly diminished when I flicked the records over to see what label they were on, Not Now Music, not exactly up there as a top reissue label.
A little research found these guys and confirmed my initial thought that they were taking advantage of more liberal EU copyright regulations.

Any regular TW browser will not doubt have come accross many of this companies compilation cds in the cut out bins.
What a shame that the lps dont have a better providence . I would happily have paid out for 3 or 4 releases if I could be sure that the lps had got within sniffing distance of a master tape.
There's some more on Not Now Music here

Bummer,

You didn't buy any to let us know how they sound.
Maybe that's a good though, as I would hate know they sound really good.

One caveat...

This label specialises in re-issuing albums from beyond "the 50 Year Copyright" rules. They have not been licensed from the original tape-owners and therefore the source of the masters used is unknown. It's all legal but the sound might not be as warm as a real analogue issue of the same album. The clue is in the cover....they do not look like the originals.

However, the one advantage is they are cheap so if you just want a no-fuss vinyl copy, I suppose it is a good deal.

EDIT: Oops...I can see you have made the same point already.

Wow, good artists. I would buy one to try if the local TW had some.

$28 not cheap !
For that princely sum you could probably find records with better provenance.

Now it seems TW has moved from the slightly dubious to straight bootlegs.
Latest lps to show up in my local were a small batch of live recordings from Queen, Springsteen, CSN and Radiohead. These are on the Vinyl Passion label from the EU and were selling for $20 each. All the releases were labeled as DMM on 180gm vinyl.
Being a sucker I grabbed the Springsteen and have to say as far as sq goes it lived down to my expectations although I only played 2 tracks before giving up. To be fair the pressings were nice and flat and appeared to be quite well done.
I see that Elusive Disc and Amazon also stock these releases. Murky waters.

Local WH had a stack of these sitting on a photo printer since Xmas !

Useless buggers didn't put them out for sale as they had no suitable racking...

Waste of time anyway I had a squizz and they are fourth rate reproductions from dubious sources.

Prices on the stickers on the records are all wack too.

I picked up a copy of 7 Worlds Collide - When the Sun Comes Out, stickered at $14.99, scanned at $9.97.

Do any Auckland stores stock vinyl?Last time I checked, JB Hifi, RGroovy & Marbeck were the major ones with vinyl. Check it online.
Then there's Conch Records for Hip Hop, Reggae, Dub, etc.

A restock of the Vinyl Passion lps at my local including Talking Heads,Warsaw, Neil Young and Eric Clapton. Despite being bitten once before I picked up the NY(Live at Cow Palace) as it seems to get fairly good reviews. We'll see.

Are you guys so starved for vinyl that you have to resort to these over-priced, third rate pressings ?

:p
