It is a 2005 1.8ghz PPC with 1gb RAM.

Our school had a firesale and they flogged 18 of the buggers in 20 minutes, via email, one per customer!

My School IT man stripped it, and set it up with leopard. I only bothered downloading Senuti (I have a classic with 98 gig of WAV audio on it) and libreoffice, as the wife likes to print off houses we can't afford (the free canon pixma is another story).

I have been impressed that such an old machine starts up in 25 seconds, runs quiet, and surfs quicker than my 2gb 2009 work HP laptop.

I may have access to an identical unit (for another whopping $10) and am thinking about upgrading the RAM to 2gig (pretty easy on these machines) and running it as a music server via my usb dac, just for fun.

It's my first mac.

Good value! You won't be able to run the latest version of iTunes on it, but you'll find an older version will run just fine. I ran a 9 year old G3 iBook as a music server for a couple of years, with iTunes 7 and 8, and only 640MB of ram.

The original poster's mac appears to exceed the minimum specs for the latest version of iTunes (10) so it should run fine.

That's excellent. I thought they'd dropped support for PPC chips in the newer version of iTunes but the G4 and G5 are still supported.

Yup - running the latest itunes. I would love someone to develop media monkey for apple (it is my favourite app) but you can't complain. My PC had crapped its internal audio (only sound through the headphone out) so this will do nicely as a USB source.
