Now the warmer weather its on its way we are spending more time in the kitchen which opens out to the deck and garden.

Until now weve just had an ipod touch in a logitech dock streaming the music wirelessly from the server downstairs.

When the doors are all closed up and the wife is streaming National radio its all good, but when I have it opened up and want to listen to some music the sound is obviously pretty awful. I dont want to listen to it out in the garden blasting the neighbours, I just want to improve the sound in the kitchen so I can turn it up everynow and then.

Im tempted to use an old laptop I have sitting around doing very little as a 'media center' for the kitchen. I have the HTPC in the lounge doing the same so its not unfamiliar territory and I could probably set up a Mediaportal client to get the music to the laptop.

But in terms of speakers and possibly an amp what would you all suggest ?

Budget would be limited but mainly because I know nothing about shelf speakers (if thats what theyre called) or amps. I might be able to swing to $500 eventually, but I honestly have no idea.

Its a reasonable size kitchen/dining room in pretty much a square. Id say 6m by 8m at a stretch and Id like to have something up in the corners out of the way if possible.

Any suggestions ?

What about some small powered speakers? I haven't heard them, but Audioengines seem highly rated and well in budget. You can also upgrade the source later and/or add a subwoofer.
